In addition to being an English major, I am an avid bookworm. I devour books in a day that would take others a week. My obsession with books means I spend an inordinate amount of time in my local library. I love the feeling of being surrounded by books, old and new. I love the building that houses these wonderful stories. This is why I don't understand when people say, “Why do we even need libraries?” or, “There's no point in these anymore. Everything is online”. These buildings are important necessities to society.
First of all, most public libraries have summer reading programs that inspire children to read. These programs encourage children to read early in their lives. They offer incentives of prizes if these children complete the program requirements. Public libraries also have teen programs. In my own local library, they have teen movie nights and book discussions and other libraries have other similar programs.
The library aids adults in their various searches. Anyone can get a library card. It's simple and free. The card is like a magic pass for everyone who has one. With the use of this card an unemployed adult can make use of the computers to fill out job applications. Almost all job applications are online now, but not everyone has internet connection or even a computer at home. Those without homes can use the local library to help them get back on their feet. The ones who are unable to afford an education can educate themselves through the use of the books and computers and other resources the library has to offer.
Having the library saves money. Besides books, most libraries house DVDs. Anyone who is having money troubles or just wants to save money can borrow these items for free. Sometimes they can even check out CDs. These items when new usually cost around $10 or higher. Instead of wasting the money on a bad movie or book people can check the items out for free and not have to pay for something they won't enjoy.
Local libraries help in a myriad of ways. As you can see they can help anyone regardless of their current situation. From encouraging a love and appreciation for reading in children to helping someone get a job, we need libraries.
A little side note on the topic. My little sister is five years old. When I told her that my article was on why we need libraries this was her response, “So people can get books! What if people don't have books?”
Below I have a few different programs for the libraries that I mostly frequent. The Niles McKinley Memorial Library and The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Check them out!
