Liberating Things You Get To Do When You're Home Alone
Awesome Things

I have had the privilege of being home alone for a long part of the summer. I have been the queen of my castle, holding down the fort, (insert other metaphor here), you get it. This was my first long-term experience taking care of a household by myself. There were lonely moments, fearful ones too, but some very fun perks! So here is what I learned to love about living alone for a month.

Clothes don’t matter

There were times where I tried on every outfit in my closet to learn what pieces looked amazing together, and there were times when my wardrobe was simply atrocious. No one was there to care whether I was hot or a hot mess. Hair thrown messily in bun or in a fancy experimental updo, I could “try” or “not try” as much as I wanted.

Talking

I may have been alone, but I definitely had plenty of conversations. I talked about my day at work, I explored philosophical questions out loud, or simply spouted stream of consciousness; basically any thought that I had, I said.

Sing really loud

Mindless chatter wasn’t the only thing to come out of my mouth. If I had trouble speaking, I’d sing karaoke at 3 a.m. And by “sing karaoke,” I mean “practice my belting voice at the top of my lungs.”

Sleep Schedule

I could nap at 3 p.m. or 3 a.m. Sleep in ‘til noon or wake up at 6 p.m. Decisions were mine to make, and no one else’s schedule affected them.

Eat whatever you want

Cook gourmet cuisine, order Chinese takeout, try a juice cleanse, or eat two pints of ice cream by yourself, it doesn’t make a difference. Everything is up to you.

Come and go

I wanted to spontaneously meet a friend somewhere in 10 minutes? I could just fly out the door and be on my merry way. Wait, TJ Maxx is having a sale on Kate Spade purses? I was off to check it out!

Unwind

No one can judge you for watching "90210," "Nannies of Beverly Hills" and "Gossip Girl" all in one day. You can explore your guilty pleasures without anyone to actually make you feel guilty!

Me time

You don’t have to look out for anyone else, or feel bad for spending so much alone time. Every minute is an opportunity to pamper yourself, and explore your own interests. I performed many experiments on myself during the summer weeks. I have a habit of nibbling on snacks whenever I watch Netflix, so I decided to try keeping my hands busy a different way—knitting! So there I was learning new stitches while catching up on my favorite show. And no one could laugh at me for being an old lady.

Being home alone is a mixed bag. Every foreign sound is an intruder, 911 is on speed dial, taking care of four cats by yourself is, frankly, disgusting, but the perks are awesome, so no complaints here.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

winter

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
