Why it is Liberating to Dye Your Hair Fun Colors
Taylor Shirley

As someone who enjoys dying my hair fun colors, I can say that it is quite freeing to do so. There is something special about looking at yourself with purple and green and blue hair that opens up the world to you.

I first started dying my hair in middle school. I would get blonde highlights in my naturally brown hair and had a grand time. But slowly I started wanting to add other colors to the mix. So, with my mom's permission, I got a streak of purple in my hair. I was so happy that I got to do that, because the blonde was getting a little boring to me. Following that, I got a streak of teal in my hair. And I dip dyed my hair green. I also had red hair for most of my sophomore year. After the red, I went back to blonde for most of the rest of high school. Until, around 75% of the way through my senior year, I dyed my hair purple. People loved it! I got so many compliments on it, which I loved. Some people had problems with it but who cares? After the purple completely faded, I went back to blonde for graduation, to make my mom happy. Have to please to person paying for it, right? I kept it blonde until about a month ago, when I went and dyed my hair mermaid ombre. For those of you who don't know, it looks like this.

So, I think that shows that I have at least a little experience dying my hair fun colors. Therefore, here are some reasons it is liberating to do so.

1. It makes people notice you.

As someone who has a lot of experience with not being noticed, I can confirm that people basically have to notice you when you have bright green hair.

2. It makes you much more confident.

When you dye your hair fun colors in this society, you feel compelled to take a ton of pictures of yourself to properly document the hair. Eventually you find out your perfect angle to make yourself look your very best. It's science, or something.

3. You get a lot of compliments.

Nothing feels better than hearing someone tell you that they think your hair is pretty. After spending 5 hours and $100, it is much needed. Especially when it comes to kids. They can be brutal.

4. It's a great conversation starter!

So many people who shop at the store I work at ask about my hair. Yes, it is green on purpose.

5. It looks super cool with every hairstyle.

Curly, wavy, straight, you name it, it looks cool. It's like a magical way to make getting ready so much easier.

6. You can bond with so many people over it.

I can't tell you how many people I became friends with just because we both dye our hair fun colors. Who doesn't love making new friends over something you love?

7. Celebrities dye their hair fun colors, so if you do, you are basically a celebrity.

I don't know if there is any actual evidence behind that, but it makes a little since. Kind of.

Basically, dye your hair fun colors whenever you can. You never know what this could teach you about yourself.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
