Choosing a college was the most stressful experience of my life. I remember fighting with my parents for months on which schools I would apply to and eventually audition at. It was a rule that I could not leave a five hour radius from my house, which narrowed my choices to Ball State, University of Cincinnati (CCM), Millikin, Illinois State University, and Illinois Wesleyan. I was accepted academically to all, but when it came down to the music programs it was between Millikin and IWU. Both had wonderful programs, but in the end I had to choose where I felt I would get the most out of my education and feel the most at home. Clearly that was at IWU.
IWU is a liberal arts university which makes all the difference. In addition to my music classes, I am forced to take general education courses in Philosophy, Religion, and more. At first, I was appalled. I didn't want to take any more religion classes than I had in my twelve years at Catholic school. Now, I'm in my second religion class of the year and I am loving it. The whole point of taking other classes is to make you a well-rounded individual. If I hadn't been forced to take German Romanticism my freshman year, I would never be on my path to book publishing. It was that class that reminded me of my love of books and I never would have taken it if I didn't need it to graduate.
I've also gained amazing relationships with my professors because of the small student population. All it takes is dropping by during office hours, or showing an interest in their personal life and suddenly you're friends. It's insane how many students at IWU don't take the time to get to know their professors. They have such a wealth of knowledge and they're extremely interesting. Plus, it's so much easier to volunteer in class if you're talking to a friend. I wouldn't trade that for anything.
My favorite part about the liberal arts education is that it feels like I'm actually making the most of my four years in undergrad. I'm involved in a ton of organizations, take interesting classes, I've made great friends, and I even have a couple of jobs. The liberal arts atmosphere means that there is something for everyone and you can really take time to figure out what you love. After all, IWU encourages you to Pursue Your Passion. :)
