There are many shows on The Great White Way right now, but there are some that are recognized for their acceptance and representation of the LGBTQ+ community. Here are some of my favorites.
"Torch Song"
I could not be happier that this show is being revived right now. It is the perfect time for such a show to be brought back. This show epitomizes what it is like to be Jewish and gay, both in the '70s, '80s and today. It's a show about a drag queen and his interactions with men, his mother, his son, and plenty more. This is, without a doubt, a show everyone should see.
"The Prom"
A show about lesbians AND school dances? Count me in. In this show there are great dance numbers, girls loving girls, Broadway stars being great allies, and more. This new show is definitely going to be a hit this season, so keep your eye out for it.
"Midnight at the Never Get"
It is impossible to mention LGBTQ+ shows without bringing up this amazing new show. Taking place in New York in 1965, it is against the law to be gay. This show follows lovers Trevor and Arthur through their song-making expedition, through their love life, through their falling-out, and more. This fresh, cabaret-style show is incredibly touching, especially to the LGBTQ+ community, and is a must-see for this season.
"Days of Rage"
There is great debate as to whether or not polyamory belongs in the LGBTQ+ community, but whether it does or not, it is definitely present in the new Steven Levenson play "Days of Rage." And despite the debate over its place in the LGBTQ+ community, the play also comments on heterosexuality and the stereotypical relationships seen within that community. The play also features a woman kissing a woman, so that combined with its challenging of heteronormativity and gender roles makes me consider it an LGBTQ+ friendly play.
"Be More Chill"
The Off-Broadway revival of this show came with more LGBTQ+ aspects in addition to the ones that were already there. In the original run, two friends get 'boyf' and 'friends' written on their backpack, and the "Be More Chill" fandom has always supported those two friends as being romantically involved. From the beginning, also, there is a character who comes out as bisexual at the end. In the newer run, there is even a line added about how one of the characters has two mothers. This show and the fandom are incredibly LGBTQ+ supportive, and it's great seeing so much representation and support from a show with such a heavy teenage audience.
"Avenue Q"
This hilarious show has been running for over 15 years now, but it is more than just a comedy. "Avenue Q" features a pair of male puppets who struggle through the show with their feelings for each other. There is denial, rejection, and eventually a happy ending for both. This show perfectly captures the struggle between falling for a friend, not knowing if they like you back, and trying to grasp and label your own sexuality. It's the perfect show for someone who wants a laugh and a show where LGBTQ+ couples actually get a happy ending.
