An Open Letter To My Mom

Thank you for being you, and helping me become me.

An Open Letter To My Mom
Dina LoVerde

Dear Mama,

I love you. I know I say it all the time, but I really do love you so much! I honestly don't know what I would do without you. Whether it be the little things like dropping something off to school that I forgot at home, or taking me out to lunch when I've had a bad day, or the big things like holding me when I'm crying having a mental breakdown, or being just a phone call away when I'm stranded downtown at 2 a.m., you've always been there.

We might argue and fight (believe me, there's no worse feeling than knowing I've upset you) sometimes, but mostly that's just because we are the same, stubborn and sometimes bitchy people. And of course, "we always bump heads!" Even when we are arguing, 99.9 percent of the time I know you are right, because hey, you always seem to know what's best. If anyone has my best interest in mind, I know it's you, and no matter how "annoying" some things you might say may be, I know you're just looking out for me.

Through the years, we've gotten to be so close (duh, 'cause you're the best). Sometimes even a little too close! I'm sure you've heard plenty of things come out of my mouth that you could have lived without knowing, but you're my best friend. So, naturally I just blurt it all out to you! I have been so blessed to have a mom like you that I can open up to about anything, laugh with, cry with, lay in bed and watch hours of HGTV, Bravo, and E! shows with, but also be put in my place when I needed to be.

People always joke about how it's weird that we're so close, but honestly, I feel bad for them because they don't know what it feels like to have a mom like you! You are the strongest, funniest (yes, you're funny even though dad and I make fun of you), classiest, and hardest working person I know. You are the best role model a girl could have — not to mention, you are a total milf!

Thank you for teaching me that no matter how small someone may make me feel, I am worth more than that, and I am loved. Thank you for getting me through times where I literally thought my life was over. Thank you for wiping away the tears throughout the years. Thank you for the endless laughs and inside jokes. Thank you for being the greatest mom there is, and for inspiring me to be as amazing as you one day. Thank you for being you, and helping me become me.

Love,

Your beyond-thankful-and-blessed Daughter

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
