A Letter To My Best Friend

For our friendship over the years.

A Letter To My Best Friend
Amanda Herbert

When I look back to middle school now, I can't believe how much has changed over the years. However, one thing has remained constant: the relationship between my best friend and me. I'm grateful to know her. I like that I can talk about anything. I remember our handshake from middle school. If anything our friendship has only grown from over the years. We have been there for each other through the good and the bad. You have accomplished so much and I couldn't have picked a better person to be a lifelong companion.

I don't know what it would be like without being your friend. Our inside jokes are perfect. We always know exactly when to look at one another to make each other laugh. Our daily trips to Soho are the best, but I think the best thing we can go anywhere and just honestly have fun. I am never bored. We always have stories to share with one another. I know I can rely on you for anything. I know you will always be there.

It's funny to imagine that we were sitting on a hot gym floor 10 years ago in a gym at P.S 92. You have come so far and I am so proud of all you have accomplished and will in the future. We hardly argue. We know each other to the point where they can't be disagreements. I hope we never do but only continue to grow and prosper.

I want you to know that I will be with you through thick and thin. I will be with you every step of the way. We are on the next path of our lives soon. I know that even after college I will count on you for advice.

You're my confidant, literally my other half.

I hope that we're roommates. I hope that we never lose ourselves. I want you to always remember all the good times we have shared with one another. We have reached so far.

I just wanted to say thank you for sticking by me. You have never left my side once. You allowed me to be myself. You accepted me for my flaws and my choices. I hope you know I will never judge you for anything. This is us!

Don't let anyone tell you can't do anything. You're awesome and most of all you are my friend.

Now we are in our senior year of college. We have been through different crossroads in our lives. We both made new friends, but there will never be another us. I'm blessed to have had a friendship like this. I hope 20 years from now that we're still as close as we are now.

I know you're going to shine in the future. You will accomplish amazing things. I pray that all your dreams come true. You deserve every inch of happiness in the world. This is for you. This is for our friendship and everything for the years to come.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
