A Letter To My Younger Sibling Before Leaving For College

A Letter To My Younger Sibling Before Leaving For College

To my sibling as you leave for college,

Let's first start this off by saying how proud I am of you. I've watched you grow up, and watched all of your experiences throughout school, and I never had a doubt in my mind you would do great things. It's weird to think that you're old enough for college, because I'll always want to see you as my baby sibling. If I could give any advice to you as you leave, I'd personally give you the most cliche advice of them all.

Follow your passion.

When you're doing what you love and you surround yourself with people you love, college is not only easier, but a lot more fun. If someone tells you your major is wrong, or not to join a certain club, don't listen to them because I'm sure they're just insecure about what they're doing too.

Always remember, everyone is in the same boat as you when you arrive.

None of these other kids have experienced college before either, and they're just as nervous and excited as you are. As silly as they may seem, do the activities the school has planned for you, because that's where you'll end up making your first friends and those will be some friendships that last.

Join clubs.

Every school has tons of different clubs and organizations to be a part of that can interest anyone. Not only does joining activities look good on your resume later on, but being able to have an organization full of people with the same interests as you is a good escape and stress reliever if school ever gets hard.

Don't hesitate to call me/home.

I am always here 24/7 to give you advice, answer your questions, or just to talk. You're my best friend no matter who I meet or have met at school and you always will be. If you need to call home just to check in or talk to your parents, no one is going to shame you for that. Every student at school feels homesick every now and then and calling home/visiting home is the best medicine.

Here's a good one, do your homework and study.

College is truly about the experience, but don't forget what you're there for. Study hard and work to get good grades because it's important to earn those for the future, and it feels really good to get that A after all your hard work too.

There is so much I can say to you, and so much I can tell you, but I want you to experience and figure out some things on your own as well. No mater what, I'll always be here to answer any of your questions, but I'll also step back if the situation is something you want to do on your own. Just remember that I'm only a few hours away and I'll drive to you in an instant if you need me. Get ready to start an amazing four years (and beyond) of college and enjoy being a kid in a whole new way. I love you the most, and I know you're going to kill it at Temple, because they're lucky to have you.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
