A Letter to a Young Girl: Struggling with Body Issues

Hi there, beautiful girl!

First off: you are beautiful. No matter what anyone says. I know it’s tough. You may you feel like you’re ugly, fat, not good enough, weird, geeky, etc. I have been there. It is AWFUL. I was bullied severely by guys in middle school. They would constantly call me fat and ugly. I went home to my parents and just cried about it the whole night. It was a constant factor for 2 years. I couldn’t escape. I wanted to change everything about me at one point. Now, I’m a college student, and of course I still struggle with weight and not being “perfect” but then I wouldn’t be me.

I want to tell you first on why it’s not ideal to achieve the “perfect” body. You would be changing yourself to become someone else. You wouldn’t be you- the person that you were born to be! I promise you that things will work out with your situation- whatever it may be. Tough times DO NOT last forever, although it may seem like you. You will learn to become comfortable in your own skin, I promise. You will learn the ways to enhance beauty by how comfortable you feel about it, and you will learn that you can do what you want!! It’s your life, girlfriend!

Girls have it SO TOUGH. There’s this stupid pressure to be someone else, to be like that model in Seventeen magazine or to wake up like Beyoncé. As fabulous as models and Queen Bey are, they aren’t realistic to you and who you are. Girls can also be SO catty!! The cattiness really affect a girl which sucks so much. But girlie, you do not need anyone’s approval to shine like the star you are! Here’s what you can do: ignore those catty girls, flip your hair, and simply say: “I love myself. Have a good day!” (And I know you got that inside of you, it’s in there, trust me. This is coming from a girl who struggled so much with body appearance)

For the most part, those “perfect girls” or even guys, are struggling with themselves. Whenever you try to be something that you’re not, you lose yourself. You can lose happiness, your friends, family, and even come in contact with disease and pain. You DON’T want to lose your support system. Natural beauty is always the most beautiful part of a person!! Fake beauty? That’s not real. It doesn’t last forever either. Your soul lasts forever. What you should always be working on is your inner self- how to love yourself, how to be more confident, how to show the world that you are a queen (which you are!!). You DO NOT need to change your weight, hair, or clothing style to fit the needs of other people. Plus, it’s so expensive and time consuming to constantly be worried and buying products- which can cause stress and bad pressure down the road. Don’t do that to yourself! Life is short. You are young, fierce, and fabulous! Do what you want, be who YOU want to be. You are a wonderful person. You are loved. You are important. You are beautiful.

From one girl to another,

Sarah

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
