Dear white students such as myself,
Racist and hateful incidents that have lately been reported on campus are like grains of sand compared to the number of microaggressions that people of color experience from us on a daily basis.
We are all part of this problem. No more saying "I'm not Racist" or "I don't see color." No more walking on and minding our own business when we hear racist or hateful speech from anyone's mouth.
No more asking people of color to educate us about the history of racism and their daily experience. We are responsible for educating ourselves and learning how to be decent human beings who respect everyone's full humanity no matter what they look like.
Acknowledge that we as white people are privileged, and we need to use that privilege to serve others who don't have that. That's not equality. It's equity.
We have so much to learn, and we're not going to learn it by sitting in our rooms and doing other homework when there is a protest going on outside. If students who don't enjoy the same privilege as we do have to miss class and ignore their papers and projects to fight for safety and equality, then we damn well need to prioritize this cause as well.
