A Letter To My Future Students

Like many other things that are important to me, my future career is something that I know I will have the utmost pride in. I wanted to let you all know how much becoming a teacher means to me and why you, my future students, are the sole reason behind that.

Since I was a little girl, I was lucky enough to know that becoming a teacher was something I wanted to do. As I have gotten olde,r I’ve had to make sure that becoming a teacher was a career that would make me happy for the rest of my life, when I put all of my options on the table I chose the one that had the most meaning to me. Being a person that has an impact on children’s lives has always been something that was so honorable to me.

What truly inspired me to pursue this career path was my first-grade teacher. Her passion for teaching shined and she always made each and every one of her students feel special and unique in their own way. I hope that one day when I meet you all, I am able to touch all of your lives the way that she touched mine.

Being your teacher brings me so much excitement and pride and while I am excited for many things, one thing I am most excited for is teaching you not only things that are a part of a curriculum but about everything outside of it too! Learning is so much fun and I can’t wait to instill my passion for learning into all of you!

As my job of being your teacher, I will always give you that extra push every time you need it.

Our classroom will be a place you can call a second home and myself and all of your friends a second family. With that being said if you ever come across any obstacles, know that I will always be there for you no matter what.

I want you to know that whatever race, gender, or religion you come from, you will always be loved and accepted in my classroom. I will do my best to learn about each of your individual cultures and to incorporate all of them in our classroom. All of your ideas will be welcomed, your imagination will be encouraged to soar high, and you will most importantly have so much fun doing one of my favorite things… Learning!

Lastly, my future students, know that you are the reason I will wake up every morning with a smile on my face heading into what most people call “work.” Know that you are the reason that I have a full heart and welcoming smile when you enter our classroom every morning. Know that I am so incredibly honored to have each and every one of you in my life and that you are the reason I know I will love my career. Most importantly, I hope you leave my classroom at the end of the year with so much knowledge and happiness that you can’t wait to come back and learn more next year and throughout all the phases of your life.

I hope one day I can read this letter to you all so you can understand just how lucky I truly am to be your teacher. I can’t wait to meet you all!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
