A Letter To Younger Me

Things are going to change and that's okay.

A Letter To Younger Me
Katie Messina

Dear younger me,

A lot of things right now in your life seem like the end of the world. It seems like you'll never get through. Have no fear, you will get through it and you will move past it all as a stronger person. You will watch your own strength grow right before your eyes, and you will be amazed.

Things are going to get tough. There are many things you never saw coming that are going to completely change your life and how you view the world. They are going to make you question everything you believe in. These things are going to test your strength time and time again. You are going to get through it. You always do and you always will.

You are going to experience loss in more ways than one and you will once again be tested. You are going to lose loved ones. You are going to lose friendships. You may even lose dreams that you never thought you would lose or dreams that you never knew you had. But that is life and you must continue on despite your losses.

Things are going to change drastically and that's okay. Nothing lasts forever. Love interests change. Hopes and dreams change. Friends change. Everything changes as you get older. You have to hold on to who you are and remember that who you are should never change. Don't be afraid to stand up for who you are and what you believe in.

You will find love one day. Just because you love him right now, doesn't mean you two are meant to be together forever. You're both young and dumb and you both need to grow into your own people whether that is with or without each other. Don't be afraid to let go of him. You both learned a lot from each other and that's what is most important. You can love him forever but that doesn't mean you need to be with him forever. And when that day comes, when you two part ways, embrace the single life and embrace the journey you take to find love. It will all work out one day.

School is going to challenge you and that's a good thing because then you wouldn't be learning. Rise to the challenge and embrace it. It's okay to get lower grades and struggle to get by because you will prove to yourself that you will rise to the challenge and overcome it. You will prove to yourself that you are able to do anything you set your mind to. Don't be afraid of the challenge.

At the end of the day, you are the best you can be and don't ever forget that. When others try to tear you down, stand your ground. You will overcome your losses and all of the tough times. You will prove everyone wrong. You are going to look back and wonder how you got where you are now. You will achieve all your hopes and dreams and when that day comes, you will be amazed. Embrace it.

Love always,

Older me

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
