An open letter to the future of WV, We Have To Give Back To The Moutains That Shaped Us

In This Article:

To the Future of West Virginia,

I know at times we all want to leave our home among the hills and never look back, but we need to realize that this is our home. We have to give back to the mountains that shaped us into who we are today.

We have all heard the standard "There isn't anything here" or that "There aren't any jobs", but those who have the chance to change West Virginia leave. We are giving up on the place we call home. We are giving up on the mountains where all of our memories are made. We need to open our businesses here, tell people about how beautiful our state is, and advocate for West Virginia.

We need to take a stand for coal and the coal miners who depend on our states natural resources to make a living. West Virginia relies on coal for jobs and for energy. Coal is our past, present, and future. I understand that we will not always have an abundance of coal, but while we do, we need to use it. We need to support coal because it gives jobs to so many West Virginians. Coal puts food on the table and a roof over the heads of so many families. Coal keeps the lights on.

Although we mine coal, we need to keep our home beautiful. We need to keep our mountains green and our rivers, lakes, and streams clean. We need to take pride in how beautiful our state is. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. I may be a little biased, but I will take the view of a mountain ridge over a city any day. We need to advocate for companies to plant trees and grass after they are done using our natural resources. Our beautiful landscape attracts so many people to our home.

We must fight back to make our state a home again. We must fight the opioid epidemic. The opioid epidemic has taken over the households of too many families here. The opioid epidemic is causing our death and crime rights to skyrocket. This epidemic is putting everyone at risk. People who are suffering from this epidemic are putting others at risk because they are throwing their used needles out and spreading diseases rapidly. People are accidentally sticking themselves with the dirty needles and are contracting diseases.

We are the future of West Virginia. I am not saying it is going to be an easy road, but our home is worth the battle. We must continue to fight for our home and its future. Although all of us may not stay in West Virginia, I know that we all still want to be able to visit home. We want our loved ones who live here to live in a growing state with a thriving economy. We all need to love West Virginia every day as much as we do on June 20.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
