To those just starting college:
I was in your shoes four years ago. It’s a weird thing to think about, honestly.
These four years will fly by or maybe these three years, or five years... you understand my point. Don’t make fun of those who choose to go on for a fifth or sixth year. I happen to be one of those people – trust me, it’s because I’m getting my Master’s degree, not just because I don’t want to grow up.
But that’s also part of it. I love being where I am, and you will too. I’m 100% not ready to grow up. Don't do it, because it’s a trap, and, also, real life kind of sucks. Wherever you may be going to college or university, you are going to fall in love. With the people, with the campus, with the classes, with yourself. Granted, the last one may take some time, but you really grow up in college. You’ll see.
Keep your friends from home close, but don’t deny yourself making new friends. My freshmen year friends have all graduated now, and I can tell you, I sure do miss them. Class hasn’t even started yet and I’ve been back to school for less than a week, but I do miss them like crazy.
Not to say that your friends from home aren’t important – trust me, they are. Keep in contact. I have probably ten friends from home that I keep in contact with, if that, and the rest... well, they aren’t really in my life anymore. And I’m not saying this to scare you, but it’s something you should be aware of as your chapter from high school closes.
Another thing... just keep your head up. Things may not go exactly as planned, but that’s okay. “And if one door opens to another door closed, I hope you keep on walkin’ till you find the window,” says Rascal Flatts. That’s kind of what you need to live your life by your first year because there are going to be doors, but there’s also going to be windows, and that’s how you’ll get out of an not ideal situation.
Finally, decorate. I know it sounds stupid, but decorating your room can really change your perspective. My room in my apartment is full of pictures and full of posters, and that honestly makes the biggest difference in the world. Watch TV or Netflix, listen to music, make this place your home.
Here's my last bit of advice for you:
Don’t take things for granted. Make this place your home.
