A Letter To The Undecided Student

From someone who understands exactly how you feel.

To the student who can't seem to solidify a major,

I get it. It seems as if everyone has been asking you since you were five years old what you wanted to be when you grew up. It probably started off something that you dreamed of being, like a ballerina or a famous singer. And as you grew, so did your dreams. But reality was always right there to smack you down back into what was really going to happen. You probably wanted to be a lawyer, or a veterinarian, or maybe even an artist. It's like every year you aged, you changed your mind on what your really wanted to be.

But then came high school, and the teachers and your family are really starting to question you. "Well, college is coming quick. What do you plan on majoring in?"

And maybe you had an idea even of what you wanted to spend thousands of dollars on studying but it seemed like high school went far too quickly for you to figure out what you wanted to be when you grew up.

And now you're in college. And you still don't even know what you're majoring in.

So this is for you, the freshmen, sophomores, and all the way up to seniors who are still figuring it all out. I understand.

I get how annoying it is on the first day of class, when it's your turn to of course, say your name, year, and last but definitely not least, your major.

I understand how irritating it is when you go to your family meetings, and they are all asking you about school and how your classes are going. "What're you majoring in, again?" And you remind them that you are, indeed, still undecided. And then they fill you in with the whole "Oh yes, well you'll figure it out. You'll find your mojo."

Yeah well, that's not how it feels on campus.

I understand the feeling of needing to further explain yourself when saying you're an undecied student. I feel your pain and almost embarrassment in saying that you have no idea what to study or do with your life yet.

But in all honesty, don't be.

Don't feel ashamed for not having it all figured out yet. The truth is, nobody in college really does. They all fake it and have this extraordinary plan, but in reality, they'll more than likely end up with a different major than what they started with.

And that's okay, it really is. College is supposed to be about finding yourself, and I'm sure you've heard that the entire pathway of being an undecided student.

But just remember through it all, that it will come to you. Even if it's killing it as a manager at a retail store, or being the next genius to cure cancer. Whatever you decide to do with your life and your schooling, embrace it. Love every moment of it. This life is not supposed to be wasted on something that you're simply doing because you felt that you had to make a decision as a freshman in college.

So to all those undecided students, just wait. Life is out there, and it's coming for you.

Sincerely,

A Fellow Student Who Doesn't Have It All Figured Out

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
