Throughout my time in high school I participated in multiple college preparatory programs, AVID being one. AVID is a nationally recognized program that has been implemented in various middle and high schools across the US. When I went into high school, college wasn’t really on my mind, but that soon changed –thanks to AVID and a very special person.
Dear Ms. James,
When I first met you I was in eighth grade and I honestly wanted nothing more than to talk to you just to get out of class. Now as I take time to sit back and reflect on that event, I’m so glad I went through with it. In our first meeting you asked me what my goal in life was, and at the time, college wasn’t an option. I wanted to spend the next four years of high school in ROTC then go into the military, and eventually become a police officer. However, you had a better idea.
In ninth grade I still wasn’t really thinking about college, I just wanted to get good grades and glide through school. After struggling with friend issues, I found myself indulged in GT and honors classes—and I loved them! In March of my freshman year I was given the opportunity to enroll in another college preparatory program called Upward Bound. Following my decision to join Upward Bound, I wanted out because I hated it. I had to go to school on Saturdays and during the summer—yuck! Long story short, Upward Bound has also helped mold my life as it is now. Without Upward Bound I would have never found my dream university.
My junior and senior years were not only the busiest years, but also the most memorable. During my last two years in AVID I grew so much: mentally, emotionally, intellectually, and so many other ways. Even though almost everything you made us do seemed pointless, having you as a teacher was the best thing to happen in my four years of high school (aside from getting accepted to my dream university!) From all of the study journals, to binder checks, to tutorial sessions, and reading some book about a shepherd; we did everything for a reason. I don’t think I could feel any more prepared for college.
Knowing that I still have a support system back at Kenwood makes me feel so relieved about this whole “growing up” thing. In addition, having a second family like yours is so reassuring that words can’t explain it. I am so thankful for everything you have done and will do for me in the future. This is my thank you for showing me that I cannot settle for anything less than the best, and that college is the path for me. I just hope my fellow classmates and those that follow realize how awesome you are!
Thanks for being the best!
