A Letter To The Organization That I Call Family

It's not the length of college, it's the depth of college and this is where I found mine.

A Letter To The Organization That I Call Family

To my organization,

When I came to college, I had no idea where I would fit in...or if I would fit in at all. In high school, I did clubs that don't transfer well to college, like yearbook and Students Against Destructive Decisions. These are things that just aren't done in most colleges, especially not East Stroudsburg University. So when I met a handful of you all in the University Center, I never thought anything would come out of it.

Fast forward two weeks, I was in. I was so excited to be elected to Student Senate, even though I had no idea what to expect.

Fast forward almost two whole semesters, I am literally so blessed to be a part of this organization. It is a huge family with even bigger goals and I firmly believe that.

So thank you to my org. Thank you for always being a listening ear. Thank you for always providing a good laugh. Thank you for never leaving me without lunch plans. Thank you for your unwavering support. Thank you for welcoming me with open arms. Thank you for encouraging me to grow. Thank you for the positivity. Thank you for giving me a family away from my family.

I am so proud to be a part of such an involved Student Senate. I know that it has opened so many doors and opportunities for me in two short semesters and I can't wait to see what this organization does for me in the future. Not to mention what I can do for it!

Sometimes I find myself wishing that I had come to school earlier, even though that was impossible because I graduated in June 2015 from high school. So many awesome seniors are graduating in less than a month and it is surreal. I wish them luck in their future endeavors, hoping that they don't forget about the students that they are leaving behind.

So for the rest of the semester, may there be shenanigans that we will never forget. Thank you to Student Senate for making my year unforgettable and giving me a place to find my second family. Thank you for giving me another reason to come back next year. May you all have a blessed summer.

With lots of love, laughter, and well wishes,

Hannah

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
