A Letter to the New Visitors of Nampa, Idaho

This pretty much is just here to sum up my love for this town.

While some know all of the goings on in Nampa, Idaho and the crazy lives that the citizens of this town lead, there are others who don't even know where the state Idaho is located. Well, how rude of them. Idaho has been home to me since I was born. I've never known anything different than the weird, unidentified smell and the slight sentiment that comes from this little city. Nampa is growing, but it will always have a strange small town charm that I can't explain to anyone that hasn't been here.

For those readers that know me,I am not a completely sentimental person. There are few things that I get strangely attached to. However, weird things about this town have gotten me attached and I love it. The first thing I love about Nampa is the fact that it has both a downtown feel and a country-ish feel. If you drive about 10-15 miles outside of the actual town part of Nampa, you'll run into farms and fields of corn and mint. Why is that so wonderful? It's practically the best of both worlds! If you're feeling tired of traffic and people, just drive out a bit past D&B on highway 45 and you'll be set. It's convenient to be able to have both. The second thing that is pleasant about Nampa is that it's small enough for a person to be able to run into someone they know, but also big enough to not know everybody. Living in a small town is one of those things where everybody knows everybody, which seems to be annoying to some.

In Nampa, there is a nice mixture of people you know compared to people you don't. this makes it convenient for two reasons: 1) not everyone knows your life story and 2) there is still a likelihood of running into a pal at Walmart. The third and final perk about growing up in Nampa, Idaho is that you're close enough to Boise, the capital of our wonderful state, that you can say you live in Boise to people that don't know the area, but you don't actually have to live in Boise. Now before all of you Boise residents start to tell me how wonderful it is, I know already. Boise is great and I love it dearly. However, it is also just a short 20 minute drive away. This means that I don't have to deal with the traffic and construction constantly, but I can still go shop and hang out when I please. This is a perk because I don't have to try and explain the fact that I live 20 minutes away from Boise in a town nobody outside the state has heard of.

Overall, growing up in Nampa has been a blast. It's hard to explain to people that have never visited because it really is only awesome if you've visited. So, to all of the folks that have not been to Nampa yet or Idaho in general, give us a try. I'm sure you can find something great to do while you're here.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
