A Letter To The College Student Struggling To Trust God

You're not alone.

A Letter To The College Student Struggling To Trust God
Get Up With God

Dear you,

Don’t be ashamed of what you’re feeling right now. I’ve been there too. In fact, I’m there right now, and so are many others all around you.

Sometimes, it’s really hard to trust God.

We’ve been told time after time that “He knows what He’s doing” and “He knows the plans He has for you,” but sometimes, that just doesn’t feel like it’s enough.

We are so convinced that what we want is what we need and deserve to have at this moment. We think we have so many things figured out, so many things that are falling right into place, until one day, they’re not. One day, you realize it’s time to walk away from that boy. One day, you decide your current major just isn’t for you. One day, the dream you’ve been reaching for comes crumbling down. You don’t know what to do anymore.

Yesterday, you had it all figured out. Today, everything seems like it’s falling apart. It seems like there is no hope, no point in going on, no way things could ever be good again.

I promise you, they will be. No matter how far away God seems, no matter how devastating His plans for your life seem at the moment, hear me when I say that He is doing this for your own good.

He is good. He is only good. His plans are only good, even when they seem like they’re not. Even when the world comes crashing down, when you feel alone and scared and have no idea what to do next, He is there with you, leading you along His good path.

You’re barely hanging on. If you’re anything like me right now, you have no idea how you’re going to have the strength to keep hanging on, when you can’t even recognize the path ahead of you. Please keep hanging on. Our Good Father gives us enough strength each day to handle whatever it is that may be awaiting us each day. At the end of the day, it may seem like all your strength is gone, but a renewed hope greets us the very next morning.

God has foreseen your troubles since before you were born. He knew exactly what, and, more importantly, who, you would need in order to make it through each obstacle you were bound to face. He’ll give you the grace you need to keep walking away from that boy, that friend, or that bad situation. He’ll give you the grace to find your way again.

It will all be good. In fact, at this very moment, it is good. All of it. All of it is good and is leading you toward more good to come, because all of it is from Him who is only good.

It’s OK to not know where you’re going next. It’s OK to not know if you fully trust God right now. It’s OK to feel lost, scared, sad, and even empty. What you need to know is that you truly are not alone, and never will be. He’s holding you in His loving arms, carrying you along until you’re able to walk again.

Because, you will be able to walk again.

Love,

Me, a fellow college student struggling to trust God

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you." Psalm 43:2

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
