To The Class Of 2016

"This world has so much to offer and we have already experienced so much in the past year since leaving high school but there is still so much to see and experience."

It was just a year ago that we walked across the stage and received our high school diplomas. We knew that our world was going to change, but did we actually realize how much it was going to? Because I sure didn't. I do have to say this past year has been an amazing year. I wasn't one of those kids who hated high school. I loved my friends and I really liked going to school. But, I love college and being out of high school. I love the freedom that college offers you. I have fallen in love with my life ever since I graduated from my high school.

The past 365 days have been a whirlwind for sure. I have experienced hardships: losing friends, losing a pet who was my best friend, becoming homesick, watching my grandparents age. I have also experienced amazing moments that changed me as a person; meeting my college friends, moving away to college, traveling to New York City and Boston. This past year has taught me so many lessons. I finally understand how much life gets better after you graduate high school whether you liked school or not.

This world has so much to offer and we have already experienced so much in the past year since leaving high school but there is still so much to see and experience. There will be hard times throughout our lives but by living your life you learn how to deal with them. There will be enough good times to outnumber the bad times, just remember that.

Is it weird to think how much you were afraid of a year ago? Because you got through it all, the fears, the unknown and the unenviable. The world was at your fingertips a year ago and it still is now. Just because you have already been out of high school for a year doesn't mean you can't accomplish what you want to do. It is time to follow your dreams if you haven't started to already. The world is all yours even if it doesn't feel that way now. No matter what, never let anyone take your education, dreams or ideas away from you. Be yourself and believe in yourself and you can get anywhere you want to be in life.

I have learned a lot this past year and the one thing that really has stuck with me over the year is that by being yourself and being true to yourself can really change your life. It is so important to be who you are because you are important and you are YOU for a reason, remember that. By being yourself you will accomplish all the dreams in the world you want to. You will be able to live a life you have always wanted to live and that is so important.

You will always be a part of the class of 2016, forever.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
