Dear Thanksgiving Side Dishes

The turkey doesn't always steal the show...

Dear Thanksgiving Side Dishes,

Don't be intimidated by the turkey. I know it's the hot shot centerpiece of a Thanksgiving meal, but all of you are just as important. Without you, Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving. We all wouldn't just sit around a table and pick at a turkey. We need all of you to make the meal special and I wanted to give a shout-out to each and every one of you.

To the dressing/stuffing: Thank you for enhancing my meal. I'm not sure what else to say about you, because I don't know much about you. I just know that you're delicious.

To the bread: Sometimes I reach for you first, but don't tell anyone else. You're just so buttery and enticing, sitting there in the center of the table. You've just come out of the oven and I can see the melted butter glistening on your surface. I always want that perfect center piece, but someone always grabs it before me. In all honesty, I love you a little more than the turkey.

To the salad: I know, I know. You feel kind of left out. I really can't blame anyone, though; it's hard to add you onto our plates when it's already overflowing with everything else. You kind of just sit there on the counter, ignored, forgotten about, but I always notice a few people who go for you before the meal. Keep holding on.

To the cranberry sauce: I enjoy the way you look after you come out of the can...and that's really all I can say.

To the mac and cheese: No, I'm not talking about Velveeta Shells (but don't get me wrong...I love Velveeta Shells). I'm talking about my mom's delicious homemade mac and cheese that only makes an appearance on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thank you for being here. It's great to see you again. I've missed you.

To the sweet tea: I'm not sure how many families drink sweet tea with their Thanksgiving meal, but I sure am glad that my family does. A nice cold glass of Southern sweet tea just completes the meal, in my opinion.

To the sweet potato casserole: Thank you for adding a sweetness to my meal, although I'm not sure if I am a fan or not.

To the rice and gravy: Not many people consider you part of a Thanksgiving meal, but my family has had you as part of ours for a long time now.

To the ham: You're more of a Christmas kind of guy, but I'm glad you make a visit on Thanksgiving as well.

I know the turkey is what everyone looks forward to during their Thanksgiving meal, but let's all give the other side dishes a chance...they're just as delicious as that turkey.

I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving and enjoyed your food comas!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
