An Open Letter To My Spring Semester Self

You get a fresh start. Don't mess it up.

Dear Spring semester self,

This past semester was definitely your most stressful semester to date. You had many struggles, but you powered through it. Your GPA my have taken a major hit, but there is still time to bring it back up. You tried so hard last semester but still only received mediocre grades, but next semester is your time to shine.

Stay motivated.

Don't let yourself become lazy. Continue to push yourself throughout the semester, and don't fall short of your expectations. Do everything it takes to achieve that 4.0 and don't stop until you get it. Next semester should be a bit easier than the fall so take advantage of that. Stay on top of your coursework and don't be afraid to pass up hanging out with friends so you can finish that last assignment due at 11:59 PM on Saturday.

Get healthy.

New year, new you, right? Stop poisoning your body with junk food. Start eating carrots instead of making late night trips to Whataburger or Raising Canes. Start prepping your meals and make sure they're healthy. Start working out at least every other day so you can drop those pounds and not look like a potato when summer rolls around. Don't forget to drink plenty of water everyday. I know you get busy and caught up with the rush of everyday life, but you'll regret not drinking water. Also, you need SLEEP. Staying up until 3 AM is not only awful for your body, but it's also awful for your mind.

Be a better you.

Although you're already a good person, strive to be the best person you can be. Now that you've dropped a few people who have negatively affected your life, nothing should stand in your way. Pay it forward, volunteer, compliment others, smile, and make the best out of every situation. Start focusing on the positives and don't take a second look at the negatives.

Call your mom.

I know the semester can be stressful and you may not have that much extra time, but call your mom more often. She misses you while you're away at college. Even when you're swamped with assignments, a 5 minute phone call to her won't hurt anything, and it will also make her day. She will try to calm you down, reassure you, and try to help you as much as she can.

Although the spring semester is a fresh start with new professors and new classes, don't forget all of your good qualities from the fall. I love you because I am you, and I know what you are capable of, so do us both a favor and kill it in the spring.

Much love,

Fall Semester Self

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
