An Open Letter To Sleep

We need to talk. Remember, compromise is key to a good relationship.

An Open Letter To Sleep

Dear Sleep,

I’m sorry we haven’t been able to spend more time together. You seem like a pretty chill guy, and I’m sure you could really pick me up. But honestly, sleep, you seem kind of needy. You take so much time from my day, and when I am with you, I can’t do anything else. I am sure that you have some amazing qualities, but I keep getting stuck on the other things. For example, sometimes, I’ll spend 13 hours with you and wake up feeling worse than I did before. It’s way too hard to find the perfect balance that you need.

Apparently, I am supposed to spend a third of my day with you. But that only leaves ⅔ of my day for everyone else. It seems a little selfish to me that you should get so much, but give me so little. How about we compromise here, I’ll give you a few hours every day, let’s say five? I’m sure we can make that work. That way I can give the other 19 hours to the other important things in my life: school, God, friends, food, TV, and more. See, my life does not revolve around you.

I don’t want to go about my day worrying whether or not I’m giving you enough time anymore! It’s so frustrating to be sitting in my math lecture and hear you calling my name, asking me to spend time with you! I get it, you’re lonely, but I am just one girl.

And then sometimes, I get ready to spend time with you, and you are nowhere to be found! I am trying to spend time with you, and sometimes it takes you hours to come! I get it, you can be busy, too. But for someone who seems to always want to be with me, you’re not around enough when I need you. I’m sure we can work on this.

I know you want a set schedule, like 11 o’clock every night, but try as I might, some others pull me away. Now I know what you’re thinking, but don’t deny that you have kept me too long and made me miss some important things, too. Like track practice last week! You didn’t let me go, and I missed it! It’s okay, I forgive you, and I understand, but I would prefer if we could prevent situations like that in the future. So how about this, let’s make 11 o’clock our tentative meeting time, and I’ll let you know if I will be late, but you have to let me know if you are going to be late, too! And then, let’s try to get up before my 8 AMs; we can work out a reasonable time later.

I think that is all, I look forward to improving our relationship in the future!

Stay restful,

A Sleep-Deprived College Student

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
