A Letter To My High School Self

"And oh you got so much going for you going right" -Brad Paisley

To my high school self,

As Brad Paisley felt the need to help his younger self prove it’s him, I think I should let you know that I know your diary is in between your nightstand and your bed and that you don’t wear socks with Converse. I’m kind of starting off not knowing what to say and trying to decide whether I truly have any regrets since you are going to love where you are at 21.

Times are not always going to be easy and soon you will lose people in your life that you never thought you could live without but you’ll make it. Tough times will always end, I can assure you of that. Don’t let yourself stay down for too long, remember that you have best friends and your mom to help you through anything. Remember that things will always work out in the end and there is so much to live for.

Maybe try a little harder in high school, I know that it can seem easier now to just make a 69.9 in classes and squeak by but you’ll feel a lot more accomplished when graduating if you do well. You have so much potential and I don’t want you to waste away your classes by sleeping, texting, or doodling. Also, don’t listen to your mom when she tells you to take Spanish instead of French, you’re just going to end up learning French on your own in college.

Some little tips too, I know that you are about to start learning how to drive. Don’t worry, parallel parking won’t be as annoying and terrifying as you think and if you like a boy, you should tell him. Don’t spend all of high school fawning over one guy if he doesn’t like you back. You’re wasting your time honey. Be sure you wear shorts to Lillie’s birthday party or you may embarrass yourself on the Ferris wheel.

Lastly, don’t worry about everything. You won’t get into a car accident until college, you find a wonderful guy working as a barista and you never become a drug addict just a coffee addict! Maybe try to go to at least one party too? Socialize? I don’t know, I guess your awkward self is pretty great too though.

I guess what I’m really trying to say is, here I am at 21 and looking back at all those years I wish I had cherished the time more. Life will pass you by and as cheesy as it is, make sure you live in the moment. Don’t worry, college will be better than you ever imagined. Even if it’s not the school you plan on going to right now.

Sincerely,

You.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
