A Letter To My Roommate Who Survives A Whole Month Without Me

Dear Roomie (aka Sarah),

Our first semester is coming to an end, meaning that you have dealt with my weirdness and goofiness for about a few months and yet you survived. I am known to be a quiet person and sometimes kind of hard to be open, but talking to you, I became a more open person and surprised to find out that we have more things in common than what I thought. You accepted many things about me that some people think that it's very weird of me to like it. We are very similar, but I'm just a little bit more crazier than you.

We met through Facebook during the "looking for a roommate" process because I know I didn't want to go through a random roommate. To find someone who is similar to me was amazing because it did help take the "home sick" feeling that comes and goes. Two Disney fans living in the same dorm was really fun, especially when either one of us were playing a random Disney song to sing along with. I will never forget that random Power Ranger conversation we had because some people have no idea the many series that they had. Our conversations in general were random, but always fun

You accepted the fact that I love anime and came in terms of me being a K-pop fan. To find out that you are also an anime fan just made me like you even more, even if you didn't know what anime was, I would've been introducing it to you for like the first two months of the semester. You had an idea of what K-pop was, which was alright with me, but I felt proud in myself that I got you into one group because of their catchy and addicting song, Blood, Sweat and Tears. All I have to do now is to get you to admit that you love Jimin, but that's a project that can be saved for another time.

Our walks, either in the afternoon or at night, were always fun because hatching eggs in Pokémon Go took a lot of time. Running into our band director because our music building is a gym always made me laugh. It was always fun hanging around you.

I thought it was going to be weird sharing a room with someone since I always had a room to myself back at home, but it was actually really fun. I'm glad we became roommates and best friends because you are like a sister to me. I always was with my brother back home, so it was nice to have you around. As I am leaving a day or two before you, I hope that you do well on your finals and that you have an awesome winter break. By the time you read this, you will be wondering when did I have the time to write this without you looking at my laptop. That is the type of skills that I have. Anyway, have a nice break, I will be texting you over the break and trying to get you into another K-pop group and see you in a month for basketball band.

From your goofy but loving roommate,

Destiny

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
