A Letter To My Niece: Thank You For Making Me An Aunt

The day you came into my life was one of the best days of my life. From that moment on, my life changed forever.

For 12 years, I was the baby of the family. I was the youngest and last born, until you came along. I was very hesitant about you at first. I wasn't sure how life would be after you came into my life. But since the day I met you, I realized that this was a huge misconception.

You allowed our family to get closer. You coming into our world was the best thing that could have ever happened to us. Because of you, I got closer with my sister, your mother.

We grew up together. As I became a woman, you transformed from baby into a toddler into a kid. I witnessed you in every stage of your life, yet I can't wait to see you continue to grow into an amazing and strong woman.

You have taught me what it's like to be a mother. You have given me the opportunity to prepare for the future. By taking care of you, I now can see a little glimpse of what I can expect when I start my own family.

Our bond is unique and special. It's a mixture of a mother-daughter relationship and a best-friend relationship. I hope you can look up to me like a mother, yet still be able to share things with me like your best-friend.

For the past nine years I have watched you grow into the most amazing human being. Whether it is excelling in school or on the soccer field, I see how you have grown into everything that I could have hoped for.

You allow me to see life differently. Although you may force me to put my phone down, I get to appreciate the little things in life. I get a glimpse into life through your lens. Your goofy yet determined look on life allows me to perceive my own views differently. When you fall down, you get right back up. Your worry-free attitude is contagious. You inspire me everyday to be a better person. Your smile and laugh can make anyone's day better.

For me, I will continue to be the best aunt that I can be for you. I will be here whenever you need me, your shoulder to cry on or friend to laugh with. I only hope that I have brought joy into your life like you have for me. I hope that my presence in your life has positively impacted you. I want to inspire you to be who you are and let your personality shine. I hope that my accomplishments in life help you see that anything is possible.

I can't wait to see you to continue to grow up. I hope that you will follow your heart and chase your dreams. Just remember that wherever life takes you and no matter how far away we are, I will always be here for you.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
