Dear Niece,
You are one of the most important people in my life without a doubt. I’ve loved watching you grow up so fair and being there for you through your toddler years. I can’t wait to see you grow up into a teenager and eventually an adult. I know you’re only four but here are some words of advice about growing up. When you’re older, I hope you look back at this letter for guidance.
First off, always have confidence in yourself. This is important. If someone else doesn’t agree with what you’re doing, don’t let that affect you. Have enough confidence to not care about what others think or say. That being said, never let people make you feel bad for being you.
Always be kind because you never know what other people are going through. However, if someone is being mean to you, stick up for yourself. Don’t let others push you around. Only be harsh when it’s absolutely needed.
Don’t give into peer pressure. This sounds easy to do, but sometimes it’s not. Don’t do something because it’s “cool” or because “everyone else is doing it”. If there is something you want to do, you do it because you want to. But if someone is forcing you to do something say no and walk away. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.
To avoid from hanging around with the wrong crowd, try to focus on school work. This is also important so you can get into a good college, if that is what you choose. When doing school work, do not procrastinate. Don’t do it. I personally have done this a few times and it’s not wise. You’ll be stressing out in order to get the assignment done. Yes, focusing on school work is important; however, don’t forget to have some fun. Don’t just be consumed in homework and academic awards, be social and make good friends.
Do what makes you happy. Don’t do something, like a job, just for the money. Passion is more important. If no one agrees with your choices, don’t let that bother you. This is where having confidence in yourself comes in. If what you chose is something you’re passionate about, don’t worry about what others think.
Finally, and most importantly, if you every need anyone to talk to, please know you can always come to me with anything. I will be honest and try to give you the best advice. Never be afraid to talk to me about anything, no matter how big or small the situation is. I will help you best I can, because odds are I may have been through it as well.
I love you very much,
Auntie
