A Letter to my New College BFFs

A quick "thank you" might not be enough.

A Letter to my New College BFFs
Abigail Krysczak

Dear College BFFS,

Thank you. Everyone always tries to prepare you for your freshman year of college, but no one truly can. Blood, sweat and tears are poured into your classes while you’re still trying to maintain a social aspect or like me, even a sport. I truly cannot thank you beautiful women enough for being there for me through it all. For all the emotions I have suffered over this past year, you’ve stuck by me when you could’ve just left. Here are the few times I have been most gracious to you all:

For all the tears I shed:Thank you for wiping them away. Thank you for sitting next to me repeating over and over again that it will be okay, even if I did everything in my power to tune you out because I didn’t believe those words. Thank you for never commenting on how ugly of a crier I am because God knows, you’ve seen that ugly crying face a half a dozen times. Thank you for being my little sideline cheerleader through all the waterworks.

For all the laughs I have probably woken up my neighbors with:Thank you for making those happen. Thank you for forcing the funniest moments on me at the most random times, because without those laughs, I wouldn’t have made it through the year. Thank you for always saying the lamest puns, even when you know they only make me laugh because I’m so sick of hearing them. Thank you for dancing like an idiot or contagiously laughing to get me to. Thank you for being the reason for all my laughter this past year.

For all the times I needed you the most:Thank you for being there. Thank you for dropping what you had to do to be by my side. Thank you for being my confidante and letting me gossip to you, even though I figured by the end of the day it would get around the entire group. Thank you all for being my person down for a vent sesh at all hours. Thank you for all being unique and giving me the widest variety of a friend group, giving me options as to who I needed for what and when. Thank you for opening up your hearts to be there when I simply just needed you.

Realistically, every single second at school has been so worth it because all of you. I truly cannot express the amount of gratitude I have towards all of you, even if I fail to express it most times. From being the better pieces of me and knowing what makes me tick to knowing what makes me pee my pants from laughing so hard, you have all been the biggest part of my college experience and I couldn’t imagine my freshman year without any of you. I cannot wait to live with all of you next year and make memories that I know I will have for a lifetime.

I love you to the moon and back babies.

Love,

Me

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
