A Letter To My Best Friend

Forever the Patrick to my Spongebob.

A Letter To My Best Friend

To my absolute best friend,

Where do I even begin? Words cannot even express how thankful I am to have you in my life. We have been through so much together over the years. Time has flown by with you, it feels like just yesterday we were sitting next to each other in middle school sharing a bag of pretzels in algebra class. However, a lot has changed since then. We went to different high schools and now different colleges but that has nothing on our everlasting friendship. Although we cannot see each other too often, our endless inside jokes, short face-time calls late at night along with keeping up our Snapchat streak and tagging each other in funny Instagrams make it a lot easier to keep in touch. We are both always busy doing our own things, however when we do finally get to hang out, it is as if no time has even passed. We always pick up where we left off and update each other on our crazy lives.

Thank you for always being here for me. I know I can always count on you to text me back at 3 a.m. or pick up my phone call at any given time. You are probably the only person that I've texted every day for the past five years. I love how we always talk about the small things that happened in our days like how we liked our outfits or if the food at the dining hall made us sick.

Thank you for always making me laugh. You always know how to cheer me up. I do not know how you do it but you are seriously the funniest person I have ever met. There is never a dull moment with you. You always make me laugh the hardest.

Thank you for never judging me. You've seen me at my worst and at my best. You've held my hand through heartbreaks and you always offer the best advice. I know I can count on you to help me with anything from schoolwork to texting boys back. (The amount of screenshots that have been sent between us...) You always know what I deserve, even when I don't. Thank you for constantly sticking by my side and supporting me.

We have shared some unforgettable moments from countless hibachi dinners to awkward double dates to reading each other our letters we wrote to say goodbye before leaving for college. I have never laughed and cried harder with anyone else.

I admire you very much. From your consistent optimistic perspective on everything to how driven you are, you truly inspire me. You are so kind, generous, funny, dependable and overall just a remarkable person. I know you are going to be extremely successful as you radiate ambition.

Without you, I do not know who I would be. You have left a handprint on my heart. You will forever be the Blair to my Serena and the Patrick to my Spongebob. Always remember that you are loved and essential in my everyday life. Also, always remember you are stuck with me forever because I am never leaving your side.

Xoxo

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
