A Letter To My High School Self
istock.snapo

Dear Jordan from high school,

Yes, I’m you from the future. A lot of things have changed since high school. Let me tell you something. I’m going to tell you a few things, and when I do, you might be surprised when I tell you them, but you might not be surprised. You don’t believe me. Well, if you don’t want to know what happened during or after your high school years, I guess I won’t tell you. Oh, you’re actually begging me to tell you. If and when I tell you what happens, promise you’ll forget about it after reading this letter. Good.

First things first, I wanted to say that you started writing a book during your freshmen year. No, I’m not kidding. You didn’t want to wait until after college to start writing your first book. The idea just came to you in your head, naturally. Then, you decided to start writing it. My advice to you is, don’t give up on writing. Once you start writing your book, it’s hard to stop. It becomes a habit in a good way, not the bad. Also, reading helps you become a better writer. Yes, I know you love to read. You’ll read a lot of books during your college years. They will help you to write better. You will continue to write and expand your writing.

I know you encountered bullies in high school. It does get better, but not as better as you wanted it to be. You have friends who protected you from the bullying that happened to come into your life. That wasn’t while you were a freshmen. I’m sorry that it happened to you. I know what you were going through. As the years go by, you will be negative for a while, but soon you will be able to be positive about yourself again. I’ll explain about that later. You shouldn’t listen to those people anyway. You are not ugly and fat. How do I know you ask? It’s because you will start to listen to and believe people when they say you are not ugly and fat.

In addition, I know some people had said that no guy would ever like you or want to date you. That’s not true. You will meet a guy who will find you beautiful and not weird. He accepts you for who you are. You guys will have a lot of things in common. He is a better guy than the guys you had crushes on in the past. You want to know who he is, you ask. Well, I can’t spoil that for you, but I’ll tell you about him. He’s handsome, funny, smart, and will be special to you. Trust me on this one. Once you meet this guy, you might not realize it at first, but you will fall in love with him as you get to know him.

Those are the things that I wanted to tell you. Don’t forget you have family and friends who love you. Don’t you ever forget that. Promise me you won’t.

From,

An Older You

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
