A Letter To My Glasses

A comedic piece remembering my old glasses.

Dear six year old Harry Potter looking tortoiseshell glasses,

Even though I lost you just a couple of days ago, I will never forget you and how you looked on my face and the compliments and the glares that I received when you were on.

I am sorry for somehow losing you somewhere on campus. You know me, I am usually super organized and with my busy schedule, I took you for granted for a coupe of seconds and you disappeared.

I realize now that I probably could have treated you better and could have shown you off more often. I also know that there is not one picture on my Facebook page of me wearing you, so I am sorry for that too.

In the grand scheme of things, maybe it was because there were those moments where I just wanted my eyes to be free for a while and wanted to go out on the town dressed up without having to worry about you.

Of course, I have to admit that there were also many moments when I felt embarrassed to show you around. For instance, every time I walked through the hallway or around campus, I decided to take you off and hide you in my bag because I thought that people would look at me more normally with you off.

But we certainly accomplished a lot of great work together in high school and at Fairfield U. In those moments that I couldn’t see, you were right there by my side ready to enhance my eyesight and face the challenges of reading small font or encountering the “in your face” lights that come from the MacBook Pro.

Despite losing you, I have found a replacement of course and they are essentially the upgraded version of you. In fact, they actually might compliment my eyes better with the light turquoise temples and the darker tortoiseshell rims. Here is a picture of what they look like when I was in the studio for StagsTV...

I hope you like them. Maybe somehow God was telling me in a weird way that it was time for a change and that you were no longer trendy. I love my new glasses since they kind of remind me of the type of glasses that would come from a store like Kate Spade. So I don’t think I will be taking these off of my head anytime soon.

On a side note, I have always had to wear glasses and there have been times when I would want to give up wearing glasses and buy contacts instead. But now I have finally realized that glasses are stylish and wearing glasses is a part of my personality. They can be very fashionable and can make you at least look intelligent at the same time!

However, if I somehow lose these pair of glasses down the road, contacts will be the next step.

For others out there who wear glasses and have gone through a similar situation of losing them, one of the messages here is to embrace who you are with your glasses and don’t be ashamed. Also, take care of your glasses because if you are treating your glasses carefully, you are treating your eyes carefully too.

So glasses, thank you for coming on a long journey with me and I will certainly miss you just a little bit!

Sincerely your former and last owner,

Kelsey

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
