A Letter to My Favorite Little Boy

Everyone's got one.

A Letter to My Favorite Little Boy

Hi Buddy,

I want to first start out by saying that when I look at you, I am flooded with hope for the future. I hear stories all the time about how bad and heartless some men can be, and I know with such certainty that you will not be one of them (or I will find you.)

I will forever be astonished by how much promise you hold in your little body. Right now you might be content eating fruit snacks off the floor or chewing on your foot, but one day, you will be something so amazing and special, that it probably hasn't been invented yet. We're waiting on you to change the world, but only after you've had your nap.

However, at night, when I'm laying in bed, I sometimes get worried for your future, and for your choices. So, I pray for you.

I pray that you will know how to express your feelings. Boys are told to be "manly" and "tough", but I want you to know how to tell if you're lonely, or scared. This will make you such a better person overall, not only in friendship, but also for whatever beautiful person you decide to spend your life with. Being able to communicate is so important in life, and being able to communicate effectively will help you succeed in may ways, and grow emotionally.

I pray that you will make mistakes. I pray that you will hurt someone, and that you will be hurt, only enough to know that it is not the way you want to live your life (seriously, though, don't kill anybody). I want you to stumble and fall a few times, because the bad times make the good times sweeter.

I pray that you will ask for help. If you feel helpless, and you can't find a way out, asking for help is not weak. Ever. In fact, it shows you have the strength to put aside your pride. Even if I'm mad at you, you will always have me to turn to, because that's what love is, and I love you. Even if you slobber on me, which you almost always do.

I pray that you will never find pungent, cheap cologne. And if you do find it, I pray that you will put it on correctly or I will take it away.

I pray that you will be a gentleman. Be humble in your masculinity, and gentle in the way you present yourself. Being chivalrous is not sexist, it's polite. Mama raised you to know the difference.

I pray that you will always feel loved, and well cared for. Because you always are. And if you don't feel that way, realize that you're probably a teenager, and you'll look back and realize how good you had it. You're okay for right now.

I pray that you will find what makes you happy, and that you will stick with it. The most important thing is to find your happy place in my opinion, and mine is usually where you are.

I hope that you know how much I love you. I hope you know that when you are happy, it makes me happy. I'm a much better woman for having known you, and for having loved you to pieces like I do. I also hope you know if you don't stop screaming at me, I'll probably lose it.

Love,

Me

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
