A Letter To My Dog On His First Birthday

I wish you could read so you'd know how much happiness you bring me.

A Letter To My Dog On His First Birthday

Dear Levi/Levi-Leeverson/Beeps/BP/Leevers/Bad Puppy,

When you first came home that cold February night last winter, I had no idea how much I would love you. Having just lost our childhood dog, Luke, a few months before, I didn't think any dog could ever measure up to him.

I remember looking down at you sleeping on my lap during the car ride home and marveling at how tiny you were and what kind of dog you'd grow up to be. Once we got home, I watched you gingerly explore your new surroundings as you familiarized yourself with your new home.

Over the next few months, while I was away at school, I would look forward to coming home on the weekends and seeing how much you'd grown throughout the week. I loved getting pictures of you from my mom every day and hearing all about your latest antics.

Once I came home for the summer, I was thrilled to get to spend more time with you as you turned into a big dog before my eyes. Now, as your first birthday swiftly approaches, I can't believe I ever worried that you wouldn't be a good enough pet.

Now, I love seeing your head peeking out the window when I get home late, and it brightens up my morning when I'm making coffee before work and you get out of bed to come visit me. While you spent the first six months of your life torturing me with your razor-sharp puppy teeth, I love that you're finally learning how to give kisses.

This is the first time I've been old enough to remember one of my dogs as a puppy, and it's so bittersweet to see you go from a little puppy to a full-grown dog.

I've loved watching you learn to love the water, going from a timid puppy who would only put his paws on the first step of the pool to a fearless dog who will swim out into the deep end. Nothing makes me laugh more than when you get excited and do your "spring move," where you jump about three feet straight up in the air.

Every time you climb up on the couch to lay with me, pretending that you're still small enough to be a lap dog, my heart melts a little bit more. Last but not least, I love it when you show me how smart you are: sitting, laying down, giving your right and left paws, and rolling over.

I'm so glad you were the puppy we picked and that we are lucky enough to get the chance to be your family. I love all the fun we've had together and I can't wait for more adventures as you get older (and better at walking on a leash).

Happy 1st Birthday, Leeves.

Love,

The person who gives you treats.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
