A Letter To My Colorguard Instructors

Dear color guard instructors,

Since I began my journey in the color guard world, you were always there for me. You raised me from a small little sapling into a strong, sturdy tree. You taught me my first baby steps in the form of a drop spin, and you taught me how to leap in the form of a toss. You watched me grow from a flag, to a rifle, then a sabre. You have not just watched me grow in color guard, you have also witnessed me grow as a person.

Before we met, I did not know what I wanted to do, but color guard has become a passion of mine. You have seen me put all I can into what you have taught me, and I take every lesson and apply it in the real world. I also take my stresses from my life and merge it into my performance in guard. You have seen how my stresses can make me a better performer.

You have seen me at my worst and at my best, and you have accepted me no matter what. I plan on improving more and more with your mentorship, each season is a new challenge that I gladly accept. Under no condition will I ever turn away from a challenge you throw my way. I will just continue to push myself until I meet your expectations of me.

On the off season, I miss the long practices, I miss the competition days, I miss the silly traditions, I miss the show, but I am awaiting a brand new season with new goals and new experiences. We have a little while to go before we are together again, but until then, I will practice in my free time trying to improve my technique and stamina. I cannot wait until we are all together again.

Thank you so much for teaching me everything I know and I just wanted to tell you how much I love and miss you on the off season.

Sincerely yours with love,

Someone who misses guard

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
