To my boyfriend living hundreds of miles away,

I miss you, a lot. One of the hardest transitions since going to college was seeing your smiling face every day to seeing it once every two or three months. Sure, we can Snapchat, text, FaceTime and call, but it’s not as good as being together in person.

Since we’ve moved away to college, I feel closer to you than ever before. I’ve been fortunate enough to witness all of your successes so far, in school and running. I know there will be much more in the future. FaceTime dates have been a blessing, and it’s the closest thing to actually being with you. We can spend a night watching the same movie together even though we’re in two different states, which is truly incredible. We’re sharing two different college experiences with one another when most people only get one. We’re pretty lucky.

Thank you for being my best friend, even from so far away. You’re always there to celebrate every small victory, to encourage me on my hardest days and to listen. I can’t tell you how much it means to me that I can count on you to always be there. Your support and encouragement are rare, and I'm so thankful for it. No one has ever been there for me like you have.

I’m so proud of you and everything you’ve accomplished in just a few short months. Your classes and course load are full of honors and labs, and you’re tackling everything like a champ and earning all A’s. I couldn’t be more proud. On top of it all, you’re involved in multiple clubs. You continue to run and train for races and workout with your personal trainer. You’re seriously amazing. I don’t know how you do it, but I’m so proud to call you my boyfriend.

I appreciate you always thinking of me and keeping me in the loop. Even when you have a busy day with classes or you're out with friends, you let me know before and keep me updated. You know how much I worry. You tell me when you make it back to your dorm safe or if you're going out somewhere. Although I'm far away, it comforts me to know that you're safe.

Thank you for working hard and making this work. Long distance isn’t easy, it requires a lot of work and communication, and it means so much to me that you’re willing to put in the effort and time just to talk to me or see me. I’m grateful that we can communicate and talk on a daily basis, because I don’t know what I’d do without you. You’ve been my rock in college, and my very best friend. I can’t thank you enough for everything. I love you.

Love,

Maddie

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
