A Letter To My Best Girl

In 2007, my very best girl was born. I sat in the waiting room eagerly on a Wednesday afternoon, waiting to go back and see Mom, and to find out whether or not I was going to have another boy, or girl cousin. Dad came to the waiting room to tell the rest of the family that you had arrived, and that you were a beautiful, healthy baby girl. You were all wrapped up in Mom's arms, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on you. I was 10 years old when you were born, and I couldn't wait to be old enough to carry you around like a baby and on my hip, and to watch you all by myself - all of the things big people get to do.

Growing up and having your mommy and daddy as my second parents was such a blessing, and it meant that I was going see you all the time. When I turned 12, I started to babysit you, and I haven't stopped since. I taught you and your brother how to tie your shoes, and we practiced letters, reading, math, and so much more. When I was 14, you and I tried out for a ballet, and danced in Aladdin the ballet together. Although you don't remember much of that, and at the time you were too little to really understand, I was so excited to share my love for dance with you, and to teach you new things.

Throughout my teenage years, I was the dominant babysitter, and you preferred me over anyone (Shh, don't tell the others). I spend my summers babysitting you and your brother, and I can't think of any other job that I'd rather have. I look forward to all of the new adventures to be had, all of the ice cream to be eaten, and all of the soccer to be played.

When I was 13, I competed in the Wayne County Fair Queen and Princess Pageant. At this time, you were really into princesses, and dress up, and really took an interest to what I was doing. Throughout my entire pageant experience and beyond, you have been a big supporter, and I can't wait until you compete.

Today, I am finishing my first year of college. I knew before I left, that it was going to be hard to leave you, and only see you occasionally, and boy was I right. I hate missing out on the little things, like knowing how your day at school was, being able to get you off the bus, and missing out on the "Hi Sissy!" followed by a tight squeeze. You're my best friend, I tell you everything, and you just get me. When I come home and see you, I hate telling you that I have to leave, and I'll see you again when I'm home. I cherish all of the memories that we have made, and I cherish our strong relationship. I'll never be too old to hold your hand, build Lego creations, teach you new things, and to kiss you before bed.

You truly are my Best Girl, Anna Lauren

- Love always, Sissy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
