A Letter To My Best Friend As We Both Grow Up

We never went to grade school together. We never went to high school together. Now, we don't even go to college together. But throughout all those years, we managed to create a friendship so strong and so special that will never go away. We proved that we don't have to see each other every day in order to be best friends, and even though we're hundreds of miles away you're still the first person I want to tell everything to. Making new friends in college is refreshing, fun, and certainly different, but no matter how many people I meet there will always be room in my heart for my one true best friend. You're irreplaceable. As we both start to grow and mature in our college years, as we begin our paths to our future careers not knowing where life will take us, I hope this letter is a reminder that I will always be with you.

When we first met years ago, it had never crossed my mind that we would become friends. We were young, had our own group of friends at our different schools, but luckily enough our paths had crossed. From the moment we started talking about things we had in common to the first time we hung out together, we knew instantly that we would become the best of friends. And sure enough, we did.

From that moment on we have experienced so many things together and have made memories that could fill pages upon pages. We were there through our successes and failures, and we were there through our darkest of times. Friendships like ours go far beyond texting and hanging out when we're bored; we know each other inside and out, and we're in too deep to give up now. You know way too much about me, so you're basically stuck with me. I have no problem telling you everything or going to you when I'm sad or upset because I know that you will listen and give me advice whether I want to hear it or not. You're not afraid to be honest with me, you're not afraid to speak your mind, and those are such important qualities to have throughout your life.

Both of us being in college can be hard at times; not being able to just drive over to your house to hang out or run and get food at 2 a.m. But the fact that we manage to keep in touch almost every day and that we still know what's going on in each other's lives speak volumes about our friendship. It tells us that amid everything going on in school, work, and with our other friends, we always make time for each other and realize that our lives wouldn't be the same if we didn't keep in touch. Whenever something crazy or exciting happens, we're always the first to tell each other right away instead of waiting until we meet up again. It has become second nature. Even if that means blowing up each other's phones while we're sleeping or in class because we have something important to tell, I would so much prefer that over waiting for months to come home again.

The one piece of advice I want to give you for the future is to never let anyone or anything change who you are. Your personality, humor, attitude, and all-around character is why we became friends in the first place. People will try to put you down, criticize you, tell you that you can't do it, but you cannot let negative people affect you. Don't let them change your opinion of yourself and don't let them damage your confidence. Surround yourself with people who love you -- people who see the real you and who like you for who you are. Be the best you can be and show everyone those amazing qualities that you have.

When we both graduate college and begin our lives as real adults, no matter where our futures take us I promise that I will always be there for you. If we end up in different cities, different states, or even different countries, no matter how far away we are I will always be a phone call or text away. We always tell each other that we will never drift apart, and I'm a firm believer in that. We have been through too much to sacrifice our friendship for anything. I want to be the maid of honor at your wedding, the godmother to your child, and when we're both parents I want our children to be best friends just like us. I want to be there every step of the way. You never have to worry about me leaving you because I promise that that will never happen. We're both growing up, we're both experiencing different things at this point in our lives, but it's the fact that we share those experiences with each other that make our relationship so strong. It's the fact that we tell each other everything and what we're going through that makes us realize that we all need someone like that to stay with us for as long as possible. Someone to trust, someone to open up to, and someone who will continue to be by your side.

Change is inevitable; we will both encounter plenty of bumps in the road that will take us by surprise, but I know one thing that will never change, and that is our friendship. We have never let anything come between us, and I know that we never will. We don't always see eye to eye and we have had our fights, but we always find a way to get through everything. Nothing is too serious or too strong to break our inseparable bond. Not school, not boys, not anything. Friends like you are so incredibly rare this day and age, but I'm beyond lucky to have found you and have created something so special that everyone deserves to have. No matter what happens I will always be there for you, cheering you on, and supporting you in everything that you do.

Lastly, I want to thank you for staying with me through all these years and for never giving up on me. Thank you for caring and putting in the effort to keep our friendship as healthy as it is. Thank you for helping me through some of the best and worst times and for giving me such insightful advice that I still carry with me to this day. I wish you the best of luck in school, in your career, and I hope that you find that special someone that will love you as much as I do. Here's to our futures, our successes, and a friendship that will only grow stronger and stronger for the rest of our lives.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
