Dear Professor,
Imma let you finish, but I need to explain why you are wrong. I understand why you don't want me to use my laptop or iPad to take notes. I understand, but I do not like it. Here are some of the reasons why I will never agree with this rule.
"Studies show that I won't remember what I've learned."
Oh really? You want to go there? I don't leave it at sloppy notes typed on my laptop. I go back through those sloppy notes and hand write color-coded notes. Proof can be found here on how I take my notes. Not only does this allow me to review my notes, but I am also re-learning all of the material by re-writing them. This reasoning also supports my next argument.
"I won't remember what I learn because I'll be doing other things on my laptop."
Actually, I do better when I am allowed to multitask. My previous grades show it. When my mind is forced to focus on only one thing, it shuts down completely. When I am allowed to work on my article, taking notes, and scrolling through Facebook, I retain the information better. I also tend to have some of the best notes. My notes are great, and my respect for you as a professor is even better.
"Overall, it's disrespectful."
Yes, I understand how it's disrespectful. I agree to an extent, but I will participate and answer questions when asked. I will respect you just as much if not more than my fellow classmates. Respect is one of my most important values, and that is why I'll keep my laptop, iPad, phone, etc. put away during your lectures.
Sincerely,
A Slightly Aggravated Student
P.S. If you're not going to allow laptops, don't tell us "Oh, it's in the PowerPoint." I can't look at the PowerPoint until I am out of class. Of course, I'll look through the PowerPoint, but I won't remember to look for that exact topic when I go through it.
