Grandmas Are The Glue That Holds The Family Together

Thankful that my Grandma loves me... Grandma style.

So I recently looked up in the Urban Dictionary the definition of a grandma, and here is what I found...

A grandma:

1. The only person in the family that knows how to cook

OR

2. Most likely your favorite relative, next to the cool uncle.

As soon as I read the top two definitions I thought, "could this BE more accurate!?" And then I realized it absolutely could be more accurate — because there is so much more to a Grandmother than that!

From the time I first remember you, we were practically best friends, and at first, that was probably because you gave me all the popsicles and fruit chews I wanted... But we soon developed a closer friendship, a bond almost as strong as a mother and daughter.

After the all the goodies came the "I'll ask grandma" stage because I knew that mean old Mom wouldn't let me have another toy or Tootsie Pop... but Grandma would.

Then came the stage of laughter when even when you weren't trying to be funny or brighten my day, you could.

Slowly you became a friend, someone on whose shoulder I could cry. As I got older, I would always come to you more and more for advice (and food) because there is something about the beautiful age of Grandparents that makes them so so wise.

I now can see where my Mom got her beauty and wisdom, because although you don't look like you did 40 years ago, I still always say to myself "I hope I look as good as Grandma at her age."

There has not been a day since I was born that you didn't send or deliver a birthday card and gift. Not even a single Christmas where you didn't show up with cookies and gifts. Twenty-some grandkids later and you still find the time to come to our sporting events, plays, choir and band concerts, award ceremonies, birthdays, you name it and you're there. If I didn't know better, I'd say there had to be dozens of you! Besides my parents, you were the first to call me beautiful, intelligent, kind and every time I think I can't, you remind me that I can.

You inspire me in all that you do and have done. You worked your entire life to get where you are. Just as my parents have done for me, you did for them by working to support them with a roof over their heads and good food to eat. I only hope one day my heart grows as big as yours. And to find a love like yours and Grandpas, well I don't think I could as anything more.

You see Grandma, you are SO much more than someone who can cook magically delicious food and be everyone's favorite relative at the same time. You are a best friend, an inspiration, a caregiver, a secret comedian, a master storyteller, the glue that holds families together.

You are a Grandma, and for that, I can never be more thankful for you.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
