A Letter To My Aba

A Letter To My Aba

When we head off to college after high school and learn to do many different things on our own from making doctors appointments to making sure the college bill is paid to calling home, we often only contact those who we lived with, whether that be mothers and fathers of siblings too. One phone call we usually forgot to make after we leave the nest is the phone call to our grandparents. So many times we have taken our grandparents for granted and we never fully realize that we do until it is too late and we can no longer tell them how much we appreciate all they do for us. Here, I want to say thank you to my Aba, who has been just as much a mother to me as my biological mother.

Things could have been so different had we continued living in North Carolina or California. I would not have had the opportunity to see you every day or whenever I wanted to. There would have been plenty of phone calls or pictures sent from across the country, but it would not have been the same. There would have been less summer spent at your house where you watched us every day while mom was at work. Although I miss Papa greatly, I am glad his health brought us back to New York and granted me with the opportunity to spend as much time as I want with you.

So many times you have been there for us. From giving us rides home from school and taking us to practice, to being a summer camp over the summer and taking us to the zoo or park. I could not have imagined a swim meet without you sitting on deck cheering me and congratulating me no matter what, good or bad. I am convinced by now that there has been no person to sit in the bleachers as much as you have all these years. Aba, I would not have had all the opportunities I have been given without you around. You have also made sure there was food on the table and that we got to see parts of the world that are unimaginable to most.

So here's to you, as I sit in a college dorm trying to figure out where my life is taking me I wanted to thank you. Thank you for all that you have done and being an absolutely amazing human inside and out. I am thankful for all the years I have been granted to have you in my life and hope you can pull through for many, many more. I promise I will call you to say hello, because when students go off to college, we forget that our grandparent's timeline is growing shorter, and they have had just as much an impact on our lives as our parents.

I love you Aba,

Madysen

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
