An Open Letter To #LSU20

And all incoming Freshmen

An Open Letter To #LSU20

Move in day is approaching and I know you've seen people say you're not going to be so excited about starting college once you actually start. Or you've heard "I was once an excited Freshman but then I blah blah blah." Yes, I rolled my eyes as I read those same statements last year too.

They already rolled out their Freshmen advice. Then they told you all the bad things like what's the worse dorm, or how bad the food is, and of course Himes.

Do not listen to them. You may not get the best dorm; everybody doesn't get the best dorm. I promise it'll be ok and if you're like me you'll only be in there if you have no where else you could be. The food may be bad in the dining halls but there is always other options. And, I must admit Himes is pretty intimidating but it's college. You've been having to take tests your whole life. Himes isn't going to kill you.

The point is your freshman year is what you make it. Don't let anyone make it for you.

If you want to go to Tigerland go, even if you are black. If you want to go to Vibes on Friday and Vice on Saturday GEAUX. The only people who talk about people who go out are those that don't because they don't want people to label them and those that do only to watch everyone else. I personally would give them a show and have a good time while doing it.

Incoming freshmen, don't let anything distract you from what you really want to do. Stay focused and balanced. If you want a 4.0 try your hardest and study. Do not go to a party the night before a test. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE ANOTHER PARTY.

If you have nothing to do and want to go to Insomnia Cookies at 1 AM, grab a friend and go. I promise the guy who resembles Drake working at the front desk of your dorm will not care enough to think you're going "Netflix-n-chill." Even if you are, NO ONE CARES. Don't let bae tell you what you can and can't do either; big NO NO. They can't live your freshman year for you, you have to live it.

Bottom line is whether it be a guy or a girl; a group of friends; people from home complaining you don't call enough; or even a job don't let it stop you from being you. Meaning, if you're a homebody be a homebody. If you're a homebody who wants to leave home for a party or even a football game, leave home.

You can't get your freshman year back.

Do not let college and all that comes with it discourage you. Some days won't be your day and you will feel like all the statements I told you to ignore above are true. You might oversleep for a class or three. And when it rains on class days just be sure to have a raincoat, some rain boots, and an umbrella.

There's so many experiences LSU, or college period, has to offer and no one ever said it would be perfect. There's someone somewhere who would kill to be able to be where you're about to go; Embrace it and don't care what "They" say. In the words of DJ Khaled, they don't want you to win, They don't want you to be happy, you smart.

PS: Don't be nervous about failing. Do the work and you'll be fine. college is 90% work and 10% smarts.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
