To the Injured Athlete,

I'm sorry. I'm sorry that whether big or small, you've faced an injury to your body that is keeping you from playing the sport you love so dearly. You may have had a small sprain, a concussion, broken bones, muscle tears, the list goes on and on; but all you can think about is wanting to get back in the game. I know because I've been there before and I'm back there now. However, I'm not here to tell you how much it sucks to be injured, we already know this and definitely don't want to be reminded. What I am going to tell you is what you need to hear in order to get better.

First, don't push an injury off because you think it's "nothing", that "you're fine", or that you can "tough it out". There is no shame in talking to your Athletic Trainer when you tweak something at practice, that's what your trainers are there for. It is SO much easier to fix a small problem from the start rather than waiting. Had I not ignored my pain for a few weeks, I may have been able to fix the problem right away instead of still being in therapy 8 months later. Learn from my mistake and address the problem right away.

Speaking of addressing the problem, for any of you athletes who are going through treatment and physical therapy, it will get better. The best thing you can do is be optimistic, keep a positive attitude, be patient because healing takes time. As much as you want to get back to practice and back in the game, your body isn't ready yet and needs to be fully healed. If you start playing again before you are 100% better then you significantly increase your chances of re-injuring yourself. While you might think you are healed, trust what your doctor, therapist, and trainers say; they want you better as much as you do.

Which reminds me, listen to your therapist, trainers, and doctors!! This is their job, they know what they are doing. They are going to work to the best of their ability to get you back in the game, but they can't do their job unless you do your part. That means when they tell you to rest and do your exercises, do it!! You are not going to magically get better, it takes time and work that you must be willing to put in. Trust me, I know how awful those exercises and stretches are, but I also know they work.

In the end, it is going to take time to heal. Although you may be physically out of the game, that doesn't mean you are mentally out of the game. Take the time of your injury to get in the right mindset of what you can do to get better. Maybe that means watching YouTube videos on plays and skill drills that you and your team could use, studying the opponents game strategy to find ways to beat them, or simply visualizing your gameplay (it's actually proven visualizing can increase your chances of success) So my fellow injured athlete, the world is not over, you will recover, and you will get back to the game you love so dearly; but for now take your time and fully heal.

Sincerely,

A fellow injured athlete

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
