There's nothing quite like you.

An Open Letter To Grey's Anatomy

Dear "Grey’s Anatomy,"

I want to start this out with a big thank you for being such an amazing show. From great story lines to intriguing characters, there’s never a boring episode. Now I will admit, I was a not an original watcher but I have been hooked ever since. And thanks to Netflix I have been able to binge watch your wondrous eleven seasons. Those eleven seasons have been a crazy roller-coaster ride that I am so glad I got on.

From the very first episode you have provided a show that never disappoints. Every character is special and unique in their own way. While it has been heartbreaking seeing a character leave (as many of the original characters have), they are always replaced with a new character who brings a whole other interesting perspective to the show.

My personal favorite has been the character development of Alex Karev. You are going to absolutely hate him at first but as the seasons continue he becomes a respectable and incredibly compassionate doctor and man. He captures the hearts of many as he steps up to become Meredith’s person when Christina leaves and works hard to save children’s lives.

Another character that is obviously unforgettable is the one and only, Meredith Grey. From the very beginning you gave us a loveable and relatable character. She started out as a mousy intern and turned into kick-ass surgeon, whose raising three kids as a single mother. Meredith has shown the many viewers how to be a strong, independent woman.

You’ve never back downed from tackling tough or controversial topics. Making two of your main characters lesbian and bisexual was a risky move, but a really crucial and influential move to make. While the show is full of personal drama, every episode provides a lesson of empathy. It shows both the compassion that the doctors have for their patients but also the difficult position that they are put in at times.

The major take away from the show is that family doesn’t necessarily need to be related through blood. The relationship between Christina and Meredith illustrates that we all need a person who accepts us despite our flaws and will be there for us no matter what. All the characters have complicated pasts; however, each of them overcome their individual demons and blossom into strong individuals. Teaching us all that we should never let our past mistakes define our future.

Overall, this is honestly one of the best shows on TV. There is nothing quite like Grey's Anatomy. While there are other medical dramas, none of them will ever compare to you.

With lots of love,

Your #1 fan.

P.S. Don’t think I forgot to mention all the amazingly good looking actors. From the originals, McDreamy and McSteamy, to the more recent characters, Hunt, Riggs and Avery, you’ve never lacked in eye candy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
