Letter to Freshmen Residents

An open letter to incoming freshmen residents from a resident assistant.

Letter to Freshmen Residents
Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District

Dear Freshmen,

Welcome to your first year of college! I am your RA while you live in the residence halls. Before the year begins, I wanted to let you in on a few things.

First, I, and all the other RAs, are here for you! We want to help you make the most of your college experience. Whether it is going to the caf to get dinner, having a study session, going to a campus event together or whatever else we may do, we want to make sure you’re having fun and enjoying your time here at school. Becoming really good friends with an RA also comes with some great perks, but I won’t say what they are, you’ll have to figure that out on your own.

College is also a time when students seek new ways to have fun. Most the time, this involves alcohol. Unfortunately, consuming too much alcohol or drinking irresponsibly can actually ruin the fun. Having been an RA for the past two years and with a most of my friends being under the age of 21, I have found numerous ways to have fun without all the drinking. Some of these other activities include having a game night, watching movies or going on an adventure somewhere. And sometimes just relaxing and watching all the drunk people can be more entertaining than being drunk yourself!

Going along with that, if you decide to stay in and do something, just make sure to follow the rules. While some residents think RAs are out to “get them,” we really aren’t. In fact, we don’t want to document anybody. Not only is it a lot of work for us, but ruining a night of fun is one of the last things we want to do. We were in the same place you were during our freshmen year, wanting to have fun and try new things. That isn’t to say that we no longer have fun and try new things, but we have to be smart about what we do.

Even if you do not decide to follow any of my advice, there is one thing you should remember during your time at college: being involved around campus is the easiest and best way to ensure you’ll enjoy your time here. Programs that the RA staff host every month is a great way to get to know your neighbors, form bonds with your RA, and make friends with people you’ll see every day. Attending other events around campus and getting involved in clubs will not only give you something to do, but it will help you meet other students, and you may even discover new interests.

So as you are getting ready to move on campus and start a new chapter of your life, remember that the RAs are here to support you and make your experience enjoyable. You’re only in college once so make the most of it, but remember to be smart about your decisions.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
