An Open Letter To My Cousins

Some of the best people in my life are those who I know will always be in it.

An Open Letter To My Cousins
Splitting Hairs Blog

Cousins are such an incredible blessing in our lives that I feel like we don't thank enough. I have cousins in all ages, from their late 20s/early 30s all the way down to toddlers. Since my dad is the youngest of his brothers and my mom is the oldest of her siblings, I have many cousins who are far older than me, many that are around my age, and many that are far younger than me. Yet as I think about it, I have been able to learn things from every single one of my cousins, on both sides of my family.

When I was a little kid, I looked up to the older cousins on my dad's side of the family, and I still do look up to them now. The lasting impressions they made on me, even by those who were only three years older, were those of love and service. I watched as my older cousins who could have very easily have gone and conversed with the adults instead chose to play with my little sister or toss the ball with my younger brother. I always appreciated being able to talk to them and feeling like I was heard and taken seriously despite being many years younger.

On my mom's side, I absolutely love being able to hang out with my little cousins. They are some of the cutest kids I've ever met and I will always love going to see them. When I get to hang out with my younger cousins, I remember how my older cousins treated me when I was the little kid, and I hope that I will be able to make the same impressions that they made on me.

Lastly are the cousins who are my age. I can never do justice to how much I love and appreciate these best friends. No matter how far away they live, I love being able to talk to them and I count down the days until we get to see each other at family reunions. These cousins are the ones who I know I can tell anything to and who I know will be by my side for the rest of my life. Having cousins who are also your best friends is such an incredible blessing; it gives you a constant in your life that you know will always be there. I know my cousins will always be there for me, and the time we spend together is so cherished to me.

Cousins are a gift. I love being able to talk to my cousins, to see them, and to be able to have them in my life. No matter how little or how often we see each other, I know that they will always love me and I will always love them. Social media has made it possible for me to see their lives even when we don't see each other and I am also forever grateful for that. It's great to be able to have these family members who are able to act as both family and friend in the same capacity, and who you know will support you for the rest of your life.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!
