A Letter To 14-Year Old Me Starting High School

Dear 14-year old me,

This week is the first day of high school for you. After years of wanting to escape middle school, you will finally escape. But, here are somethings to expect when you start:

You will find love.

After years of having crushes on people, your love life will finally go somewhere. You are, however, going to find love in the wrong people. There are going to be people who take your love and use you for it. They won't treat you right and you won't realize it until it is too late. After all of that, you will find the one. You will find the person who won't abuse your love. They will treat you with the respect you deserve. They will love you unconditionally, even if you think to yourself, "How could they ever love you?" You will keep them forever in your heart because they are the first person to deserve that spot in your heart.

You will not keep the same friends after high school.

I know, you cannot believe that the friends you just made could ever leave you. But, they will. Some will leave without a word. Some will have the final word. With some, though, you will have the final word. You will realize that some friends are not really your friends. They will be there for you when you need them, but at some point, you need to let them go. Although, some friends, you will keep for the rest of your life. You will never be able to shake them from your life because they are there for you. They were there for the bad times and the good times. They are your true friends. You will forever go get midnight snacks at the grocery store and have late night talks at McDonalds with them.

And, finally, you will find yourself.

After years of going through your emo stage and your makeup stage, you will find you. You will find out the real things in life you love. You will find the thing that will set what you want to do for the rest of your life. You will find out there are somethings you use to do that you actually hate. For once in you life, you will not have to fake your interests to fit to everyone else's interests. You will get to express yourself in ways you could never have imagined. For once in your life, you will feel like yourself in your skin.

You will not escape the drama of high school. Everyone has the drama. But, overall, high school was a lot better than you expected it to be. So enjoy every dance, football game, sleepover, and party that you go to. You will cherish those moments for the rest of your life and they make some great stories for college.

Love, the person you are now.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
