Life likes to throw curveballs when you're least expecting them, especially when you're a young adult and you're trying to figure out your life.
For many people, their college experiences may have started off very differently than they expected. For others, their experiences may have gone exactly as they hoped. Maybe these people got into the schools they wanted, found majors they're really passionate about, and made the best friends they've ever had.
But like I said, life likes to throw curveballs when you're least expecting them, and I'm writing this article to let you know you're not alone if your college experience isn't going as planned.
Right now, I'm playing a waiting game. For certain majors at my school, there are "entrance to major requirements." Currently, I'm waiting to see if I will be qualified to officially declare my major. And it's terrifying. Imagine that a year and a half of college has gone by in the blink of an eye. You've managed to get past the most nerve-wracking part, receiving your college acceptance letter.
But as three semesters and a few summer classes have passed, you've come to realize all your hard work may have been good, but not good enough. You've gone out of your comfort zone and immersed yourself in various extracurriculars, but again, your hard work may not cut it. All because there's a chance you may not meet the entrance to major requirements.
In addition to the various requirements, there's also a credit window. Once you've completed too many credits and are outside the credit window, you've essentially missed your chance to enter that major. So, after this semester, I will have to declare my major; otherwise, I will pass the credit window and miss my chance.
This is, without a doubt, the most stressful time in my life. After this semester, I may be told that I have to switch my major, which would be extremely discouraging. I know that everything in life happens for a reason, but one of the worst feelings, in my opinion, is anticipation: the anticipation of not knowing if your hard work will pay off as you hoped it would.
While there is another major in which I am very interested, how will I know if I've picked the right path? I know it's all about trusting the universe, but how can I when this is a choice that will alter my entire life?
You may think you have the various aspects of college pinned down, but nothing is promised. Ultimately, no one's college experience goes exactly how he or she planned.
I'm not saying your life is going to take a drastic turn, or that things will suddenly go horribly wrong, but it's not worth planning out your entire college career. You could take a specific class for a general education requirement, and end up falling in love with that field. You could go through sorority recruitment because your friend convinced you, and never look back. You could have a life changing experience that leads you to willingly change your major.
Change isn't always bad; it's just inevitable. If there's anything to take away from this article, again, please know that you're not alone in your troubles.
I'll have to wait to see which path my life will take, which is easier said than done, but for now, I'll put my all into my studies and let the universe do its thing.
