A Letter To My Little Sister

You may be taller, but I will always be older.

A Letter To My Little Sister
Erin McCormac

My Dearest Sister,

It feels like just yesterday you came into my life, and until this day, I will never forget the moment that I met you. You wore a beautiful smile and a polka dot shirt. After spending one day with you, I knew that God had given me something beautiful. He gave me a little sister and a best friend. He blessed me with the gift of being able to watch you grow from a cute little brown eyed girl to a beautiful young woman.

Many people say that “time flies when you are having fun,” and I completely agree. It felt like we went from playing with Barbies to shopping for clothes together in a blink of an eye. As we both quickly approached the teenage years, we fought like every other pair of sisters would. Whether it was about sharing clothes, makeup, or just a simple nasty look, you could always find us butting heads. For someone that likes taking charge, you had no problem challenging me (which didn't make me very happy). Although we fought, I never stopped loving you. We easily resolved fights and were back to our normal and goofy selves within a few hours.

As my days at home became shorter, I tried to spend as much time with you as possible. I began to worry that we would lose the relationship that we had. We spent my last days at home mostly driving. During all of those car rides we began to form a stronger relationship. Whether we were driving to the mall, your tennis practices, or to Starbucks, you could always find us listening to Justin Bieber. We spent our car rides singing and talking about freshman year (high school and college).

Knowing that I was’t going to be home for your high school years made it extremely hard for me to leave for college. I want you to know that high school is a beautiful and challenging experience. Through out your four years you will experience a roller coaster of emotions. You will find yourself feeling invincible when you’re spending Friday nights at football games with your best friends, or in the middle of the dance floor at a school dance with the people you have grown to become family with. Then there will be times when you feel the lows, whether it’s a bad test grade or losing a few friends along the way.

Always take every situation as a learning experience, and know that it will only make you a stronger person. Yes, sometimes it will hurt, but it will benefit you in the long run. Remember to never judge a book by it’s cover, some of the most beautiful souls are in the people you would never expect. Never lose your faith. At times it may seem like God is not on the other end, but I promise you He is. Being confident and strong in your faith will allow you to live a fulfilling life.

No matter what happens in this crazy life, promise me that you will always believe in yourself. You are an amazing young lady who has an immense amount of potential. You have an amazing personality and a beautiful smile. You light up the room with your positive energy. You are extremely creative and amaze me with every piece of art work you create. Never be scared to think out side of the box and remember to always stand up for what you believe in. I am so extremely proud of who you have become and I cannot wait to see what the future brings you. Words cannot describe how blessed I am to have such a close relationship with you.

I know that I am not home to tell you all of these things but I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for keeping all of my secrets. Thank you for always knowing when I need a hug. Thank you for never turning down a Starbucks trip. Thank you for the constant support and open ears. Thank you for being the best little sister out there. But most of all, thank you for being my best friend.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
