I love these subtle moments with you.

Dear Little Sister,

I thought I would write you this letter to say a few things. First I would like to say thank you. Thank you for always being the one to tell me like it is, even when I did not want to hear it. As much of a pain in my behind you are, and even though I am always right. I have to be honest and say that as much as you learn from me I learn a lot from you. You have taught me to have patience, to love a friend, and to care truly like no one else. There is no one I’ll fight harder for. Thank you for being one of my best friends and teaching me how true friendship is supposed to be. There is no one I’d rather rag on or be ragged on. You’ve taught me how to truly be a role model in the sense I want to be my best self for you, I want to be a guide that you can talk to and look up to. I know we fight from time to time, but I can count more times of us laughing so hard that we are crying than me yelling at you for something stupid. You know me better than most people, you have seen me at my best and my worst and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

As you grow up our relationship has changed and will continue to change. Don't think that all change is bad. This is the good type of change. The older you get, the more conversations we can have and the more secrets we have together. Something that is not a secret is that I cannot wait to see you strive little sister. As the time for you to pick out college approaches, I cannot help but be overwhelmed with excitement, as I remember making that decision. The fact I get to be a part of your experience in choosing the next steps in your life makes me feel like an important role in your life. You are intelligent, beautiful and I am rooting for you even if you don’t think anyone else is in your corner. I am always going to be here for you. A family is forever but you have made friends with me for a lifetime. I desire nothing more than your success and happiness and I will be there by your side helping you get there.

Some of my best advice to your little one is to remember where you came from, be strong, there are always people who love you and never let anyone or anything tear your spirit. One of my favorite quotes from Oscar Wilde says, “to live is the rarest thing, most people exist and that is all.” I want you to live your life to the fullest and to your fullest potential. You are one of the brightest things in my life and I will help make sure that the light you bring me and those around you, never dims. I will always be here. I love you.

Love,

Your Big Sister

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
