A Letter To Myself When I Am Scared To Fail

Failure is terrifying and we both know that.

Dear Me,

If you’re reading this, it means that failure seems to be an imminent possibility in your future. At this moment, I am positive that you are anxious, in a frenzy and stressing to no ends about what is going to happen if you fail at whatever is in question. I am here to promise you that it will all be okay and that things happen for a reason.

Failure is defined as, “lack of success” or “the omission of expected or required action.” However, everything happens for a reason. Failure is not always a bad thing. Although it may be an extreme example, those who failed to make it on time to work on September 11, 2001, survived to tell the tale. Someone who failed to complete college in four years may have met their future husband or wife in that fifth year. Not all failures are negative influences in your life, as they can so often be perceived to be.

Let’s think about it, you’ve failed at so many things in your life so far but yet, you’re still here. You are living your life with pride and a passion for life. This might seem like it is the end. It’s not. You’ve survived every single failure up until now and you are here to tell the tale!

Let me list the things you have failed at so far. You failed to get into that university that you wanted to go to. You failed to get an “A” on that math test that you studied so hard for. You’ve gotten hurt and been unable to perform in competition even when your team was relying on you. The thing is though, you’re still here. Some of those things may even turn out for the better for you. While you may not have been accepted to said university, you may attend a different one and end up realizing that you have found a school that makes you truly happy.

You are stubborn and I know that you will not believe me when you read this sometime in the future. However, you just have to trust in the process even if you do not know where it is leading. Failure seems scary- terrifying even. Everything happens for a reason, even failure. It will lead you onto the path that will lead you where you are meant to go in your life.

Take a step back and read this:

“To failures I owe humility
To failures I owe will
To failures I owe life
Because without them
I might be everlasting”

-Jacqueline Maby

Your failures shape you to be the person you are, flaws and all. Sure, you screwed up one time and overestimated your tree-climbing abilities as a child and fell, resulting in a scar down your leg. That failure has given you a scar and become a part of who you are. Now you know that maybe tree-climbing isn’t your forte and you should avoid it in the future! That sounds sarcastic but it’s true. Every mistake and failure has contributed to your life story and who you are as a person. Failure is nothing to fear, only something to embrace with open arms.

Love, Me

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
